Alenka Košiša Čičin-Šain, the deputy director of the Fund, participated in the panel on the energy renovation of buildings and sustainable materials at the 4th Central Conference of the Croatia Green Building Council, explaining the role of the Fund in the implementation of energy renovation and its benefits.

The 4th Central Conference on Sustainable Building, which was held in a hybrid format on 24 and 25 November 2021 in Zagreb, gathered more than 40 speakers who talked about the importance of sustainable building, infrastructure and green energy.

“The Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund supported the energy renovation programmes through its co-financing schemes as well as from EU funds under the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion, depending on the purpose of buildings. In the period 2014 – 2020, a number of energy renovation projects were implemented, and the recorded rate of building stock renovation was 0.7%, or 1,35 million m2/year. In the period until 2030, the goal is to increase this rate to 3%, so the Long-term Strategy for National Building Stock Renovation by 2050 has been drawn up,” said deputy director Alenka Košiša Čičin-Šain at the conference, adding that the Fund wished to focus investments on the activities supporting the green growth and use of renewable energy sources. This is also in line with the national and European policies. The obligations arising therefrom should be viewed as a prospect that will provide for an altogether better society.

One of the key speakers at this year’s conference, which dealt with the subjects of the green economy, sustainable building, transport, green energy and sustainable development, was the esteemed architect Philippe Block, the main person behind STRIATUS bridge project. This is the first 3D concrete printed bridge built without any mortar or reinforcement.

More than 1000 participants followed the conference.
