Remediation of old landfill Kaštijun completed

21.10.2022.

Remediation works have been completed on the Pula landfill Kaštijun where municipal waste was disposed of for around 50 years. The project is worth 28 million kunas, with 23.8 million granted under the European Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion, and 2.8 million provided by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.

“In the old Kaštijun, more than 1.3 million tonnes of municipal and non-hazardous industrial waste had been landfilled. Now, it has become a green space. This project was co-financed with almost 90 percent of the total amount, which is great. I’d like to thank all contractors who successfully completed the projects, and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund on excellent cooperation that, I hope, we’ll continue in the future,” said the mayor of Pula, Filip Zoričić.

The head of the EU Funds Sector at the Fund, Maja Feketić, pointed out that the Fund was collaborating with the units of local self-government on landfill remediation projects, and that national and EU funding had been allocated to that purpose. “Setting up of the waste management system is a complex process. Along with the relevant infrastructure, changing consumer habits and mentality of quickly discarding items that are still fit for use, this system also requires remediation and closing of the existing landfills. Around half a billion kunas have been granted so far under the EU operational programmes, and 42 landfills have been remediated and closed. The 80 million kunas worth public call by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development is still open for landfill remediation projects, and the resources have been provided under the National Recovery and Resilience Programme,” said the head of the Sector Feketić.
