Prime Minister Andrej Plenković chaired a Government meeting in Sisak today with county mayors, representatives of the Association of Towns, and the Croatian Association of Municipalities. Before the meeting started, three contracts worth EUR 6.49 million were presented by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.

The contracts were presented by the minister of environment and green transition, Marija Vučković, and the director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Luka Balen, for the Waste Management Centre Babina Gora, Northwestern Croatia Regional Waste Management Centre Piškornica, and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Waste Management Centre Lučino razdolje. With these contracts, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund has provided temporary co-financing for the centres between the two programming periods, so that their construction can continue without interruptions, and help in achieving waste management goals and directly contributing to the green transition.

"Waste management centres are one of the key elements in the establishment of a comprehensive waste management system, so the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, through co-financing programmes, is trying to help local self-government units complete their municipal infrastructure and round-off their waste management systems," said director Balen during the ceremony of handing over contracts.

"Today's 16th joint meeting in Sisak confirms the synergy of the Croatian Government’s efforts and work of local and regional self-government units, facilitating continued and regular dialogue for a  better understanding of requirements at county, town and municipality levels, and   harmonisation of reforms. Our successful cooperation is based on partnership and mutual respect, functional and fiscal decentralisation, and project cooperation that results in a better quality of life in Croatia," said Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.

At the meeting, Minister Vučković presented information about measures to combat climate change emphasising that adaptation of all sectors to climate change would be strengthened, as well as investment in green technologies and practices. "Through a just green transition, the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition will initiate innovations and strengthen Croatia's competitiveness, to make us prepared or the growing risks of climate change that cause damage to our economy and society," said minister Vučković.
