Zadar General Hospital will implement energy efficiency measures as was presented at the project introductory conference, where Luka Balen, the director of the Fund, outlined the role of the Fund in the implementation of energy retrofit projects.

The energy renovation will be carried out on the buildings of paediatrics, internal medicine and gynaecology wards of Zadar General Hospital with the aim of achieving savings of 51 percent on the required thermal energy for heating and 63 percent on primary energy, as well as savings of 67 percent of annual CO2 emissions. At the project introductory conference, the director of the Fund, Luka Balen, emphasised the importance of this project, primarily for the city of Zadar and Zadar County, as well as for all hospital systems in the country.

"Energy retrofit will contribute to energy savings and energy efficiency, as well as raising the quality of service and working conditions. This is just one in a series of projects the Fund is implementing together with the Ministry of Construction and the line Ministry of Environmental Protection, providing professional support to applicants. About 100 million euros have been invested in public buildings in Croatia from the NRRP, so more than 100 similar facilities will be co-financed." Balen added that in addition to this, there were a number of hospital infrastructure projects whose implementation had been ensured by the Government. Deputy Prime Minister and minister of physical planning, construction and state property Branko Bačić pointed out that the energy renovation of public sector buildings was one of the priorities of the Government and the European Union, adding: "We must take care to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to reduce the consumption of energy coming from hydrocarbons, because climate change is here today and we must live with it."

The value of the project is 7.4 million euros, while the total grant amount is 5.6 million euros.

The minister of regional development and EU funds, Šime Erlić, said that this project was a continuation of substantial investment in the Zadar hospital aided by European funds. "After the linear accelerator that came to the Zadar hospital, also financed from the EU funds, after the renovation of the outpatient clinic changing also its appearance, this is another significant energy renovation project that will cover more than half of all the hospital's spatial capacities and achieve the desired savings."

"Over the next two years, these buildings will undergo a real transformation, which makes me very pleased. The hospital applied to a public call for the renovation of buildings, in this case internal medicine, paediatrics and gynaecology wards, and in April this year our application was approved," said Željko Čulina, CEO of Zadar General Hospital. "Also, we are proud of better waste management after we purchased a device for the prevention of biowaste through the Fund's public call, thus embracing the transition to an innovative green method. All these investments will reduce costs in the future and increase care for the environment and society in general," Čulina concluded.

County prefect Božidar Longin pointed out that, as until recently the County was the founder of Zadar General Hospital, they had always invested in it so as to provide the best possible environment and accommodation for all patients, as well as the best possible working conditions for the staff. "It is a known fact that Zadar County is the leader in terms of renewable energy sources in Croatia, and the first wind farm that was put into operation is in our county. For years, we have been co-financing the installation of solar panels on citizens' homes, and this is the path that Zadar General Hospital has taken. Last year, we also commissioned the first solar power plant in the hospital, and since this is the Mediterranean, which abounds in solar energy, it would be a shame not to use it in the best way," said the prefect.
