A 6.4 magnitude earthquake with the epicentre 3 km from the town of Petrinja, with the intensity level in the epicentre of VIII-IX on the EMS scale, hit Sisak-Moslavina County on 29 December 2020 at 12:19. This earthquake was preceded by two less severe ones on 28 December 2020 at 6:28 and 7:49 respectively. The earthquake was felt across Croatia and in neighbouring countries.
On 4 January 2021, the Government of the Republic of Croatia adopted the Decision promulgating a disaster in the earthquake-struck area (OG 1/21). Based on this decision, on 14 January 2021 the Government adopted the Conclusion based on which the minister of economy and sustainable development adopted the Plan for the implementation of waste management measures in Sisak-Moslavina County.
Pursuant to the conclusion of the Government, and with the aim of repairing the damage caused by the earthquake in Sisak-Moslavina County as soon as possible, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund earmarked HRK 50 million for the implementation of waste management measures. These measures include financing of the costs related to the collection, transport, sorting, and treatment of waste, purchase of the necessary equipment, and other essential waste management activities following the earthquake in Sisak-Moslavina County.
To start restoring the earthquake-struck areas, the locations where the buildings collapsed have to cleared first, and the resulting construction and other types of waste properly disposed of. In accordance with the circular economy principles, the intention is to separately collect different types of household wastes and forward it to further treatment. Key in this is the efficiency of utility companies and having well-informed citizens, for whom the Fund prepared a brochure with the relevant information
