WMC Piškornica

Regional Waste Management Centre “Piškornica” is a system of facilities and machinery for the treatment, recovery, and/or disposal of mixed municipal waste, with the total capacity of approx. 99,877 t/year. The project covers 4 counties in the north-western part of Croatia (Koprivnica-Križevci, Krapina-Zagorje, Varaždin, and Međimurje Counties), with 110 municipalities and towns and the population of roughly 530,000.

The centre is planned in the area of Municipality Koprivnički Ivanec, and the project also includes the construction of two transfer stations in Zabok and Varaždin.

At its session on 11 June 2014, the Government of the Republic of Croatia adopted the Decision   declaring the project “Regional Waste Management Centre for North-Western Croatia Piškornica” to be a strategic project.

The project was approved for EU financing in 2020, and the rate of eligible costs to be financed from the Cohesion Fund amounts to HRK 313.75 million (approx. 70%), EPEEF will provide 20%, and the remaining resources will be provided by the beneficiary, i.e. the company Piškornica d.o.o.(10%).

The construction and establishment of the Waste Management Centre “Piškornica” will contribute to the integrated waste management system in the area of four counties in NW Croatia, which will facilitate an organised, economically oriented and comprehensive waste management in said area.
