Pupils from Rovinj win the first place in the Fund’s contest “Leave an imprint, not a carbon footprint” in grades 5 through 8 category.

High-graders from Juraj Dobrila Elementary School in Rovinj win the coveted first place in middle school category in the eco-competition organised by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund. They were faced with a challenge – creating a 1-minute video clip in which they had to raise the awareness of their fellow pupils about the importance of environment protection. “Separate waste, make compost in heaps, recycle, reclaim and plant a tree. Save the water, turn off the lights - it all adds up, every little counts.“ was the advice the pupils told in their hip-hop number.

“We are so happy that the jury for the competition “Leave an imprint, not a carbon footprint” recognised the talent and creativity of our pupils. I’m confident that we’ve successfully sent a powerful message about the importance of protecting our environment,” said the mentor of the winning team Iva Dujmović. And that was precisely the goal of the competition – raising the awareness about sustainability, the importance of reducing waste, and proper waste separation.

One of the members of the jury was the famous influencer Luciano Plazibat, who visited the winning Kids Environmentalists team in Rovinj to discuss the importance of preserving the environment. “The country we live in is a blessing and we should safeguard it,” said Luciano, advising the kids to spend as much time as possible outdoors, and less time staring at the screens of different electronic devices. He is aware of the popularity of social networks since his career is related to this type of communication, but he points out that the importance of using this channel to send good, positive messages, such as this one about environmental protection. “This video is so creative and so much fun, and a great example of how social networks should be used,” said Luciano, adding he was thankful to get the opportunity to meet the creatives who made the winning video. The winners took Luciano on a sightseeing tour around Rovinj, and since this was his first-time visit, he was thrilled with the town’s charming streets and positive vibe.

The eco-competition for schoolchildren is organised every year by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund to encourage creativity and motivate the young to become actively involved in environmental protection. “We cannot think about separating waste properly or recycling alone, we have to consider the ways to prevent waste generation in the first place. Many people are not aware that we can make good decisions every single day that can drive positive changes, thus benefiting the society in general,” said Sunčana Matić from the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, adding that the future belonged to the youngest generations and it was important to get them involved in projects aimed at drawing attention to the pressing environmental problems and ways to solve them.
