60 co-financing contracts worth EUR 4.5 million presented to beneficiaries

24.01.2025.

Luka Balen, the director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, and the minister of environmental protection and green transition, Marija Vučković, handed over today co-financing contracts for 60 projects worth EUR 4.5 million. These projects are aimed at removing waste discarded in the environment (so-called “illegal dumpsites”), as well as to reduce the consumption of ozone-depleting substances and fluorinated greenhouse gases.

“In the past four years, the Fund has financed the remediation of almost 200 dumpsites with 14.1 million euros and with additional 6.8 million euros supported 75 projects for the replacement of refrigerants in public sector buildings. Both programmes are also important for air quality, which has been more of a focus lately, together with the health of citizens," said the director of the Fund in his welcome speech, announcing that in 2025 the Fund would continue with schemes for which EUR 128 million had been provided.

“Both the Fund and the Ministry have published on their websites an indicative plan of public calls and calls for proposals for 2025, so we can disclose that more than 650 million euros will be available to various beneficiaries for green transition projects. Projects related to waste management, air quality, decarbonisation and the transition to a circular economy will be co-financed, which is this Ministry’s strategic goal,” said minister Vučković. Congratulating all beneficiaries on their well-prepared projects, minister Vučković pointed out that the expert services of the Fund and the Ministry were always at their disposal for the successful implementation of these and future projects.

The contracts presented today were concluded with beneficiaries who successfully applied to the Fund's public calls in 2024. 31 local units received funds for the co-financing of the removal of waste discarded in the environment, i.e. the remediation of “illegal landfills”. A total of EUR 3.7 million will be invested in the remediation of the planned locations, for which the Fund has earmarked EUR 2.5 million in grants. Projects to reduce the consumption of ozone-depleting substances and fluorinated greenhouse gases have been awarded somewhat over €2 million through 29 contracts for the new, more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly equipment worth around €3.1 million.

After the contracts were handed over, special thanks were expressed by the director of the Student Centre in Zagreb, Mario Župan, and the mayor of the City of Rab, Nikola Grgurić, who agreed that each project should be part of a bigger picture. It is important that our local units, institutions and companies show environmental awareness through their activities and strive to contribute to the achievement of energy saving goals and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
