Completed construction of sorting plant in Mihačeva Draga

29.03.2022.

The completion of the works on the sorting plant in Mihačeva Draga for the separately collected was marked today in the Rijeka City Hall. The project was financed from the EU funds.

At the closing conference, the head of Intermediate Body level 2 at the Fund, Sanja Jelačić, pointed out that sorting plants were an important link in the waste management system since they generate more useful raw material from the separately collected waste. “The completion of the project was a success that will significantly contribute to improving the waste management system in Rijeka area and the entire Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. In addition, a substantial sum of EU grant funding was withdrawn for the project – 31.2 million kunas, which is commendable,” said Jelačić, underlining the importance of education of the citizens, and excellent partnership between the Fund and the City of Rijeka.

The mayor of Rijeka, Marko Filipović, pointed out that more than 37 million kunas have been  invested in the sorting plant and that it was the first plant for sorting separately collected waste in Croatia, allowing better usability and improving the value of valuable raw material from waste. Filipović thanked all participants in the project, and the units of local self-government project partners – towns Kastav, Kraljevica and Bakar, and municipalities Viškovo, Klana, Čavle, Jelenje and Kostrena. The mayor expressed his pleasure by the completion of the project in the set time and obtaining the use permit, saying that the next step was to choose the sorting plant operator and inviting the citizens to separate waste as much as possible, since the common goal was to have a nicer and cleaner town.

The sorting plant, as part of the civic amenity site Mihačeva Draga, covers the total surface area of 5636 m². The works included the construction of the sorting plant hall, the canopy for storing bulked recyclable material, weighbridge, and roofed parking lot.

The hall of the sorting plant houses a recycling facility, the baled recyclable material is stored under the canopy, as well as a weighbridge for the weighing of incoming and outgoing vehicles brining in the waste and taking away the sorted baled material fit for recycling. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the sorting plant hall to meet the electricity demand of the sorting plant, thus contributing to the environment, and reducing plant operating costs.

Sorting of separately collected waste increases the quality and value of the separately collected valuable raw materials from the waste and their marketing. This will contribute to increasing the rate of municipal waste recycling and reducing the quantity of landfilled waste, and consequently reducing the emissions of GHGs in the environment.
