Conference on circular economy

27.10.2022.

The head of the Sector for special categories of waste, Zvonimir Majić, took part in the round table organised by the Croatian Chamber of Economy, to discuss the implementation of the circular economy in Split-Dalmatia County. The European Commission adopted the Action Plan for Circular Economy, which is part of a more extensive Green Deal, providing Europe with a platform to transform into a carbon-neutral and competitive continent. It also opens up great opportunities for Croatian entrepreneurs.
“Through the systems of management of special categories of waste that are organised and administered by the Fund, the circular economy has already taken hold in Croatia. With regard to packaging, waste tyres and EE waste, over the years we’ve had great examples where waste gets new usable value and is made into final products. Some Croatian companies are leading in this area and have been recognised not only in the region, but beyond,” said Majić. At the time when due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine it is becoming harder to get raw material on the Croatian and European Union market, it is essential to use to the maximum the valuable fractions of the waste to obtain environmental and economic benefits.

“A sustainable and circular economy is a globally prevailing issue. We have to work on this with joint forces and raise the awareness of our entrepreneurs and citizens about achieving the target set by the European Commission to have 60 percent of municipal waste recycled and reused by 2030. This round table is one of the ways for exchanging the experience and best practice examples to show how to recycle and close the circle,” said the president of the CCE County Chamber Split Joze Tomaš.

That this bandwagon we all had to jump on was supported by the president of the Group for the Circular Economy with the CCE Anđelko Švaljek, from the company Regeneracija. “The circular economy has been recognised as one of the key tools to fight climate change, help protect the environment, and to achieve sustainable business. We are glad to have the opportunity to present the companies, projects and models that are functioning and enjoying certain success, and to hear concrete requirements of the people in the field, of municipal and other companies, because we all have to join this movement. We have a common interest. The circular economy has no alternative,” emphasised Švaljek.

The head of the Service for licences and cross-border waste transport at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, Nela Palarić, talked about the legislative framework and the circular economy, while examples from the practice were presented by the representatives of the company AD Plastik and Cemex Hrvatska.

“These conferences organised by the Croatian Chamber of Economy offer a great opportunity to companies to get the information and inputs that are important for shaping their business. At the same time, the efforts on raising consumers’ awareness are continuous as they must be educated and encouraged to buy products that can be reused,” concluded the head of the Sector for the management of special categories of waste, Zvonimir Majić.
