First stage of pit Sovjak remediation presented to inhabitants of Viškovo

In cooperation with Viškovo Municipality, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund held two presentations for the citizens of Viškovo on the topic of current status and planned activities on the project of remediation of pit Sovjak on 4 and 5 July 2023.
 
Following the announcement regarding the beginning of the preparatory works at the location of pit Sovjak, two presentations were held where the citizens and the general public were informed about current status and planned activities on the remediation project.

The presentations were prepared and presented with the aim of providing timely information to the inhabitants in the area about the start of stage 1 of remediation, but whih excludes the excavation of hazardous waste, and presenting the role and importance of measuring stations that will measure air quality in Municipality Viškovo throughout the entire duration of the project.

The website of the project www.jama-sovjak.eu was also presented, where all news related to the project are published, as well as relevant documents that interested public can peruse. Together with the website that will provide prompt information to citizens and public, a mobile app is also being developed, which will provide identical data on air quality measurement as the project website, in accordance with the obtained results of measurements from the measuring stations.
 
In order to ensure maximum visibility and transparency of air quality measurements, information displays will be installed at two locations along the roads in the immediate vicinity of pit Sovjak showing the results of air quality measurements. Communication channels, website, mobile app and information displays are extremely important for the citizens of Municipality Viškovo, as well as for the general public, as they will o ensure continuous information and availability of data on air quality, and all other information related to the progress of project activities.
 
The response of citizens of Municipality Viškovo regarding the two presentations proves their keen interest in the remediation of Sovjak, so the project team lead by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund announced another information event for the autumn. At this event the Fund will present in detail to citizens, business entities and the media current developments on the project, highlighting the works execution schedule stage 2 (extraction of waste from the pit) and measurement of air quality in Municipality Viškovo, and other activities envisaged in the case the measured parameters exceed the limit thresholds.  
At the end of the presentations, the project team answered citizens' questions, and leaflets with all key data on the Sovjak pit remediation project were distributed to them. After the presentations were completed, deputy director of the Fund Mirko Budiša and the project team visited the location of pit Sovjak.
 
For the remediation of pit Sovjak, worth about EUR 50 million, 85 percent of the funds were provided from EU funds under the Operational Program Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014-2020, while the rest of financing will be provided by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.
