On 27 May, the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund will pay the third and last instalment of compensation for 545 workers at Plobest, totalling almost HRK 33.4 million.Pursuant to the Act on Compensation of Employees of Company Plobest d.d., the employees who worked for the company Plobest d.d. from 8 October 1991 until 21 October 2002 were entitled to a compensation if they were exposed to asbestos for a minimum of five years. Each worker, including their successors, received a compensation in the amount of HRK 219,000, which the Fund paid in instalments over the period of three years.
In the past, the use of asbestos material was widespread, and unfortunately many workers who were exposed to the inhalation of asbestos dust developed serious medical conditions.
Asbestos is now banned in Croatia and the entire European Union.
