The citizens of Gospić will now be able to dispose of more than 20 types of waste at the newly opened civic amenity site whose construction was co-financed from the European Cohesion Fund with EUR 488,000.
“This household waste recycling centre will contribute to improving the waste management system in the Gospić area. Along with the previously provided containers for separate collection of plastics and paper, the citizens will now be able to throw batteries, glass, old clothes and textile, and other types of waste into dedicated bins,” said at the opening ceremony Nataša Dankić Sliepčević, the head of the Environmental Protection Department at Intermediate Body level 2 of the Fund. She added that in the last years, Croatia had made significant progress in the field of waste disposal: “Major resources from the European funds, as well as from the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, have been invested in the utility infrastructure and education of citizens.”

Mayor Karlo Starčević pointed out the importance for this project for Gospić, considering that the town was continuously investing in the utility and municipal structures for the purpose of developing a more sustainable and efficient waste management. “Our task is to provide for adequate disposal and sorting of mixed municipal waste to reduce negative environmental impact, and to maintain a high level of sustainable development and waste management. This civic amenity site will help reduce the quantities of landfilled waste at Rakitovac landfill. In addition, we’re continuing work on the transfer station and construction waste landfill, and waste sorting plant is also planned,” said mayor Starčević.
The mayor of Lika-Senj County, Ernest Petry, said that on their part the County was taking all measures necessary to preserve the environment of Lika, adding that waste management projects and education of citizens had an important role in these efforts.
