Funding for remediation of closed landfills approved to Šibenik and Polača

A total of EUR 6.5 million has been allocated to the City of Šibenik and Polača Municipality for the projects of remediation of closed non-hazardous waste landfills Bikarac and Gornja Jagodnja.

 

The contracts for which funding was secured from EU funds under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan were officially handed over to mayor Željko Burić and head of municipality Tomislav Prtenjača by the minister of environment and green transition, Marija Vučković, and the director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Luka Balen. 

 

"The Fund, in cooperation with the line ministry, is working hard on achieving the goals of waste management policy and the implementation of projects that will further improve the entire system. We have developed a detailed plan of activities related to the remediation and phasing out of landfills, we also implementing remediation of dumpsites, and a public call for this measure is currently underway," said director Balen.

 

The contract for the project of remediation of Cell 1 - the closed part of the Bikarac non-hazardous waste landfill is worth in total about 4.7 million euros, of which almost 4 million were provided through the NRRP. The rest of the investment will be provided by the City of Šibenik, and its implementation will be used to remediate approx. 2.2 hectares of the closed part of the landfill by the end of June 2026.  

 

The total costs for the remediation of the Gornja Jagodnja landfill in Polača amount to slightly over 3 million euros, of which 2.6 million are grant funding.

 

"Landfill remediation represents an important step forward in bringing to an end the old, unsustainable waste management practice. With these projects, we’re reducing the negative impact on the environment, and also strengthening local capacities for the implementation of the green transition. I am pleased that the Ministry and the Government of the Republic of Croatia can support concrete projects that change the everyday lives of citizens for the better," said minister Vučković.
