Remediation of waste bales in Varaždin starts

13.02.2024.

Based on the co-financing agreement that was signed by Luka Balen and Neven Bosilj, the director of the Fund and the mayor Varaždin respectively, the transport of the first bales of waste from Brezje started today, marking the permanent solution to the problem which has been looming over citizens of Varaždin form more than 18 years.

In the period from 2005 to 2013, about 96 thousand tonnes of baled municipal waste were disposed of at this 3.74 ha site.

After the City of Varaždin fulfilled all legal and professional preconditions for the implementation of the project, in November 2023 the Government of the Republic of Croatia adopted the Decision on remediation of non-hazardous waste landfill at location "Brezje", and put the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund in charge of providing financing in the amount of EUR 29,164,611.95, or 100 percent of the estimated and eligible project costs.

The loading and transport of baled waste started today. Over the next 18 months, 125 thousand bales will be disposed of, and the area at the entrance to the City will be developed with new facilities that can become the driver of Varaždin’s economic development. The adoption of an efficient solution to this major environmental problem and its rapid implementation are the result of consistent policy of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, and excellent cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, which is corroborated by numerous previous grants to the City of Varaždin and Varaždin County.
