Remediation of landfill Sarvaš

18.03.2021.

The project of remediation of the closed landfill Sarvaš, worth more than HRK 70 million was presented today in Osijek, with HRK 60 million secured in the form of grant from the EU Cohesion Fund.

The head of the Sector for EU Funds at the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Maja Feketić, said the projects implemented by the Town of Osijek were excellent, adding that the Fund had provided both expert and financial support during the process of strengthening the waste management system in Osijek, “The Fund granted Osijek 7 million kunas, while the main part of 60 million kunas you managed to secure from the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion. You have built recycling yards, remediated landills Filipovica and Nemetin, and Sarvaš remediation is just about to start. 32 thousand containers for separate waste collection have been supplied to Osijek, and you continuously provide education for the citizens. I believe that this project will be completed successfully as well,” said Mrs Feketić, adding that the monitoring and control of the implementation of the entire project was the responsibility of Intermediate Body level 2 and the head of the department Helena Iveković, who was also present at today’s event.

“This is our obligation under the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia until 2022, and it also complies with the obligations that Croatia has as an EU Member State. It is important to complete all the projects we have envisaged, because if we miss the deadlines, everything we have so far withdrawn from EU funds would in the end have to be financed from the Town budget,” said deputy mayor Boris Piližota.
State secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development Mile Horvat said that out of other Croatian tows, Osijek made the greatest progress regarding waste management policy in terms of the percentage of separately collected waste, and in terms of infrastructure such as civic amenity sites and remediated landfills. He pointed out that the next step entailed the construction of the Regional Waste Management Centre - Orlovnjak, rounding off the waste management system in this area.
