NIN, 28 May 2026 - The director of the Fund, Luka Balen, together with the minister of environment, Marija Vučković, handed over to the mayor of Nin, Emil Ćurko, a contract worth more than 4.4 million euros for the remediation of a site contaminated with waste in the area of the former Šepurine barracks.The project includes the remediation of about 38 thousand cubic meters of waste, including municipal, bulky, sorted and unsorted construction waste, clean excavation and insulating waste materials, which also includes construction waste with asbestos and other individual waste. Financing in the amount of 100 percent of eligible costs was provided by the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund.
Minister Vučković stated that the handing over of the contract would not have been possible without the active engagement of the entire team of Zadar County and the City of Nin. She added that in addition to the remediation of the landfill, projects for the development of water utility infrastructure are also being implemented, such as the Zadar-Petrčane agglomeration, worthe more than 100 million euros, as well as the Nin-Privlaka-Vrsi agglomeration worth 85 million euros.
"Today, here in Nin, we handed over an important contract that marks the start of remediation of the former Šepurine barracks and the removal of large amounts of waste that has been encumbering this area for years. The project was initiated by the Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and State Property and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition, while the Government of the Republic of Croatia provided financing through the Fund," said the director of the Fund Balen, adding that at the same time, the remediation of Crno Brdo near Benkovac was in progress.
Mayor Ćurko added that for Nin, that project meant solving a long-standing problem and removing a large environmental burden in the area of the former Šepurine barracks. He thanked the Government and the Ministry for recognising the importance of this project and enabling its full implementation.
