Remediation of environmental "black spots"

"Environmental black spots" refer to locations where the environment is heavily burdened by waste left behind as a result of long-term inappropriate management of industrial (technological) waste (e.g., waste from the leather and textile industries, waste from manufacturing and processing, as well as drilling muds, oil-contaminated soil, and sludges remaining around deep well sites, tank bottoms/sediments, waste from inorganic technological processes - acids, alkalis, heavy metal salts, waste from fertilizer production, waste from organic chemical processes, waste from paint, varnish, and pesticide residues, waste from the photographic industry, waste from inorganic thermal processes, waste mineral oils and waste organic solvents, tires, vehicles, and waste from asbestos production, as well as batteries and lead-acid accumulators).

Environmental black spots have been identified across Croatia, and their remediation has been included in the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Korea/Croatia for the 2023-2028 period, aiming to eliminate their negative impact on the environment and human health.

  • Remediation of the Kosica coastal area

  • Remediation of the slag landfill in the Kaštela Bay

  • Remediation of the industrial slag (the so-called "Black Hill") in Biljane Donje

  • Remediation of the factory grounds of the former ferroalloy factory in Dugi Rat

  • Remediation of the Sovjak pit in Viškovo

In order to protect the public interest and human health, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has included 6 additional waste-polluted locations in the Plan, situated in Gospić, Samobor, Poznanovec, Benkovac, Lovinac, and Pazin.

The Ministry and the Fund, within the established frameworks, are actively working on remediation projects to ensure they are carried out in a safe and controlled manner, in compliance with prescribed standards, and they regularly report to the public on all steps taken.
