Remediation of environmental "hot spots"

"Hot spots" are locations in the environment highly burdened with waste left after long-term mismanagement of production (technological) waste (e.g. waste from the leather and textile industry, waste from manufacture and processing, drilling muds, oily soil and sludges remaining around deep well locations, sediments in tanks, waste from inorganic technological processes - acids, alkalis, heavy metal salts, waste from the production of artificial fertilizers, waste from organic chemical processes, waste from residues of paints, varnishes, pesticides, waste from the photo industry, waste from inorganic thermal processes, waste oils of mineral origin and waste organic solvents, tires, vehicles and waste from asbestos production, as well as batteries and lead-acid batteries).
 
Hot spots have been identified throughout Croatia and their remediation has been included in the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia for the period 2023-2028, with the aim of eliminating the negative impact on the environment and people.

  • Remediation of the Kosica coastal area
  • Remediation of the slag landfill in the Kaštela Bay
  • Remediation of waste slag (the so-called "Black Hill") in Biljane Donje
  • Remediation of the factory grounds of the former Dugi Rat ferroalloy plant
  • Remediation of the Sovjak pit in Viškovo

To protect the public interest and human health, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has included 6 additional locations contaminated with waste into the Plan, which are located in Gospić, Samobor, Poznanovec, Benkovac, Lovinac, and Pazin.
 
Under the given conditions, the Ministry and the Fund are actively working on remediation projects to ensure they are carried out in a safe and controlled manner, in compliance with the prescribed standards, while keeping the public informed of all steps taken.
