Visit to the Višnjan Observatory

01.09.2021.

A meeting was held between Siniša Kukić, the director of the Fund, and Korado Korlević, the head of the Višnjan Observatory, which is, in terms of discovered asteroids, one of the 12 most productive observatories in the world. Apart from astronomy, they also focus on different education programmes in natural sciences, technology, and culture.

Various workshops and lectures are organised as part of the Višnjan education centre dealing with biodiversity, speleology, and environmental and nature protection.

Director Kukić pointed out the importance of ecological education and that it should start as early as nursery school, should be well structured and presented to the children in an interesting way.  Considering more frequent natural disasters caused by climate change, children have to be taught responsibility from the earliest age, and to embrace the habits and way of life that complements sustainable development.

The head of the Višnjan observatory, Korado Korlević, added that waste was not only a considerable problem but also a resource if used wisely. In his presentation he touched upon the subject of “space waste”, which is increasing in Earth orbit. This waste includes rocket stages, decommissioned satellites, and thousands of other debris in the orbit travelling at almost 30 thousand km/h.

During the visit to the observatory, the director of the Fund mentioned the possibility of cooperation between the Fund and Višnjan Observatory on educational projects that will promote sustainable development principles.
