"Increasing the rate of waste separation is a key task for all stakeholders in the waste management system. Regardless of the future construction of the Lećevica Waste Management Centre, waste separation, especially of biowaste, remains the foundation of an efficient waste management system. Biowaste can be separated at almost every doorstep, thus prolonging the active operational lifespan of Karepovac and ensureing the long-term sustainable functioning of Lećevica", said Split-Dalmatia County prefect Blaženko Boban.
Member of the Croatian Parliament and mayor of Split Tomislav Šuta emphasised that increasing the waste separation rate is a priority for the City of Split. "We are currently at around 28% and our goal is to reach 50%, in line with the commitments we’ve taken on. In cooperation with the Ministry, we are working on additional activities, including the procurement of equipment and the improvement of the system, in order to make waste separation even more efficient", concluded mayor Šuta.
" Minister Vučković reminded that the main goal of the Ministry, Split-Dalmatia County and the City of Split was to ensure efficient and undisturbed waste disposal in the county, with a special focus on the second largest agglomeration in the Republic of Croatia, Split. "The Ministry and the Fund have consulted several companies operating in the waste management system, with the aim of reducing the current pressure on the Karepovac landfill. Companies have presented their technical capacities and limitations, and we see room for cooperation and additional activities to make the system work as efficiently as possible."
At the same time, solutions are being developed to ease the pressure on Karepovac landfill, in cooperation with companies that, in accordance with their technical capacities, can receive a certain amount of waste.
It was agreed to hold monthly operational meetings to monitor progress in increasing the rate of separate waste collection and meeting deadlines, until the Lećevica Waste Management Centre is put into operation, which is scheduled for the end of 2028.
