According to the National Energy Management Information System, about 13.8 million m² of usable area of public buildings has been recorded in Croatia, of which almost half is heated. This surface are is considered essential in the implementation of energy renovation goals, which are prescribed by EU directives. Member States are obliged to renovate at least 3% of the total useful heated or cooled area of public buildings every year, thereby encouraging the reduction of energy consumption and costs, but also serving as an example to citizens in the implementation of energy-efficient measures.
The results of the renovation so far show significant contribution of EU funding and EPEEF in the energy transition of public buildings in Croatia. So far, about 900 public buildings have been renovated in terms of energy under the EU operational programs, with a total allocation of almost HRK 1.5 billion, which includes schools, kindergartens, health and other institutions. In the previous period, from 2014 to 2020, with the support of the Fund and EU programmes, more than 850 projects for the renovation of public buildings were implemented, including 380 schools, 95 kindergartens and 90 health and social facilities.
